At Home In London The Mews House by Ellis Woodman

Set behind the grand houses of Georgian and Victorian London, mews originally existed to stable horses and coaches. After the car arrived, these secluded courts began converting to residential use — first by artists and bohemians, then as sites for new-build homes that often challenged everything established about how people lived in the city.

At Home in London: The Mews House documents seventeen examples of this tradition, from the 1960s to the present, through new photography and extensive drawings. Self-built houses by architects feature prominently — John Winter, Ted and Roz Cullinan, Peter St John and Siw Thomas among them. Architecture critic Ellis Woodman narrates the full arc, from early pioneers like potter Lucie Rie through to recent projects by Peter Barber and Al-Jawad Pike.

The second in a series on London housing types, following At Home in London: The Mansion Block (2023).
