Koechlin House by Daisuke Hirabayashi

Most architecture books arrive before the occupants do — catching a building at its most composed, before life makes a mess of it. Photographer and architect Daisuke Hirabayashi takes the opposite approach. His subject is the Koechlin House in Basel, an early private home by Herzog & de Meuron, studied long after the original clients moved on. What he finds is the current owner's quiet, unplanned occupation — its small rituals, its surprises, its awkward corners.

The house was designed inside out, prioritising the interior experience over outward appearance. Hirabayashi works in the same spirit, setting aside the omniscient architectural view in favour of something closer and more embodied.

Alongside texts by Ellena Ehrl, Tibor Bielicky, and an afterword by Nicolas Jérôme Hünerwadel, these images ask what we mean when we call something architectural — and remind us that buildings have long lives after the architect has left.
