The architectural designs of Paul Revere Williams, captured by photographer Janna Ireland.
Known as “Hollywood’s Architect”, LA-born and based Williams was the first licensed Black architect west of the Mississippi River. He built his prestigious six-decade career well before the Civil Rights Movement, designing over 3000 buildings of all shapes, sizes, and functions. From banks & hospitals, to private homes & public housing, his top clientele included Frank Sinatra & Lucille Ball. As the first Black member & Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture, he posthumously received the AIA Gold Medal 40 years after his death.
Janna’s four years of photographing Paul Williams buildings has culminated into the launch of her upcoming book, “Regarding Paul R. Williams: A Photographer’s View”. She was gracious to let us preview and share these intimate captures for our Creative Features series. Her book can now be pre-ordered through Angel City Press.
