“Design makes things seem special, and who wants normal if they can have special? And that’s the problem… There are better ways to design than putting a big effort into making something look special. Special is generally less useful than normal, and less rewarding in the long term.”
Jasper Morrison, Super Normal

As a graphic design studio behind a storefront, our appreciation for well designed objects is palpable. Our inspiration often stems from the world of product design, and Naoto Fukasawa & Jasper Morrison’s concept of “super normal” captures a tension that we grapple with every day. Are we trying to create design that is “special” but sacrifices meaning or functionality? With Studio Faculty and SORT, we hope to bridge these two worlds and address this question head-on.

With WORKADAY, we aim to shine a light on everyday pieces that contain an inherent beauty in the way the designer has toed the line between functionality and aesthetic. Many of these items we have personally used and cherished over the years. Others have received more public recognition via the Good Design Award, a Japanese mark each object bears after winning in the categories of quality, aesthetic, and innovation. This curation ranges from the Allex scissors made in Gifu, Japan, to the iconic Aalto Stool 60 from Helsinki, Finland. We hope WORKADAY can also bring inspiration to your work and daily life.
