Living in a Japanese House by Kanae Hasegawa

Journalist Kanae Hasegawa visits 35 contemporary homes across Japan in this new survey from Phaidon. Each house is shown through photographs and short texts, with input from both the architects and the people who live there.

The mix runs from well-known names like Ryue Nishizawa and Hiroshi Nakamura to younger practices. One house is a wooden tower surrounded by 50 species of wetland plants; another is an apartment divided by suspended partitions. It's less about a single style and more about how each home answers its site and the way its owners want to live. Hardcover, 256 pages.
